Being from the Caribbean, I grew up hearing the term "pelo malo" or "bad hair" far too often. Having worn my hair natural all my life, I understand the feeling of not seeing our texture reflected in the world. For so long, we were made to believe that our natural hair wasn’t enough and that we had to change it to fit into society's narrow definition of beauty. Watching that stigma fade brings me so much hope and pride.

Now, I’m honored and privileged to be able to show my two curly haired daughters — and everyone else— that our curls are powerful and beautiful just as they are. Those limiting terms no longer have a place in my heart or vocabulary.
